Nigeria Starts 35% Tariff on Imported Cement

As per an Nigerian media report, Nigeria's Federal Government will levy additionally 15% tariff from July to December 2010 on 2.50 million tons of cement licensed for import, thus making 35% tariff on imported cement.

Some principal with Nigerian new-practitioners forum of cement industry indicated the policy was not favorable for new practitioners in the cement sector and for enterprises licensed to import cement and therefore suggested the Federal Government should lower the tariff rate. However, other analysts claimed such a policy would help raise the capacity utilization of local cement enterprises, therefore favorable for the industrial development.
